NOW LEAVING SUGARTOWN (Sugartown, #4) by Carmen Jenner Blog Tour: Giveaway + Sarah's Review

Pepper Ryan grew up the troublesome, spoiled child of a rock god. With her less-than-stellar parentage, and the bipolar disorder that has plagued her existence, to say this little firecracker is a handful would be the understatement of the century.

Sammy Belle spent more than half his life saving Pepper. He’d been her strength, her sanity, and the protective brotherly figure she never wanted to have.

They were never meant to be together.

They gave in anyway.

And just when Sammy thought he had everything he wanted, Pepper ran.

Now twenty-three, Pepper returns to Sugartown, a failed tattoo artist with one too many screws loose who’s down on her luck, wielding an ice cream van as beaten up as her heart.

Sugartown’s most coveted bachelor has always been content with the quiet life he leads until Pepper, the hellion from his past, returns to test his strength, his patience, and perhaps even his sanity. But two can play at that game, and Pepper is about to learn that Sam can give as good as he gets.

Can this good country boy survive Pepper’s cruel city world, or will the whole thing be put down to a bout of temporary insanity?

One thing is for certain:

He’s crazy about her.

She’s just crazy.

Warning: Intended for an 18+ audience. Contains sexual content, oodles of profanity, a firefighter so hot you may need a very cold shower, and one pink-haired crazy Harajuku girl.

Now Leaving Sugartown is book four in the Sugartown Series by Carmen Jenner but can absolutely be read as a standalone.  I read the first book in the series and was good to go skipping the two middle books (which I'll read eventually).

"Pepper Ryan-Harris-Rowe is a goddess and I'm the devastation she leaves in her wake."

Pepper Ryan and Sammy Belle grew up together.  Sammy, six years older than Pepper, was always her protector.  He picked her up when she was down, cleaned her cuts, and was her best friend.  After so many years together, they realized that their friendship had blossomed into something more but it was hard for each of them to come to terms with it due to their familial ties.

"Sam is my vagina's kryptonite.  And I suspect that somehow, in some way, he knows this."

Pepper suffers from mental illness.  She's always been revered as the crazy girl of Sugartown, mood swings, sarcasm, and a loud mouth always got the better of her.  Sammy is her rock, always there to help her when she needs him, until she runs and is out of his life for five years.

I wasn't entirely sure how many stars I wanted to give this book as I was reading it.  Granted, there are so many hilarious, laugh out loud scenes, and crazy-hot sex scenes, this book is about Pepper dealing with and overcoming her mental illness and self-harm.  It's real and raw.  Some scenes were hard to read, and may very well trigger something in someone who is dealing with these types of issues, but that's what I loved about Now Leaving Sugartown.  Some of the best books really hit on all emotions and make you truly think about what other people go through in their daily lives and hide from the outside world, and we don't get enough of that in our romance world, I think.  Carmen Jenner hit it out of the park with Now Leaving Sugartown and I want my very own Pepper as a best friend, I want to hug her, laugh with her and bitch about boys over coffee with her.

While Sugartown may not technically exist, Carmen grew up in a small Australian town just like it, and just like her characters, she always longed for something more. They didn't have an Elijah Cade, though.

If they did, you can be sure she would have never left.
