EVEN THE MOON HAS SCARS by Steph Campbell Blog Tour, Review, + Giveaway!

Two strangers. Two broken hearts. One night to set each other free.

Almost dying from an undiagnosed heart condition means every second of your life is a precious gift to be guarded.Lena Pettitt was born a miracle. And her parents never let her forget it.Even if that daily reminder kept her from experiencing the one thing they were trying to protect most--her life.

Gabriel Martinez’s heart has been ripped out.His pride has been stomped on.Oh, and he now has an arrest record that’s caused an even bigger rift between him and his DA mother. All for a love that wasn’t really true.

Now he’s exiled to his grandmother’s, working on his late grandpa’s old Corvair when a shivering girl knocks on the garage door. Lena, left alone for the first time ever, has locked herself out of her house--in the snow. Gabe knows he could help this girl get back inside her house--but that may mean missing the next train to Boston to pick up the part he’s spent eight weeks tracking down. She can wait for him at his grandmother’s or…

A few hours, an aluminum valve cover, and some strong coffee later, neither Gabe or Lena can feign disappointment when they race to the station and arrive just as the last train home from Boston is pulling out.

As jaded as he is, Gabe can’t deny the fact that he’s excited to spend the night exploring a city he knows nearly every corner of, with a girl who sees magic in the simplest things.

Lena has been waiting for her tiny world to crack open her entire life. Now that it’s finally happened, she finds the only thing she can focus on is the unexpected tour guide who opens her eyes to possibilities she never imagined.

All they have is this one night, together, under the bright moon in a city full of hidden beauty.

It’s one night that will change how they see the world and the paths their hearts will take forever.

Admittedly, I am a huge Steph Campbell fan. Granted, most of the novels I’ve read that have adorned her name have been collaborations; that doesn’t mean I love her any less. When I first heard about EVEN THE MOON HAS SCARS I was giddy.  I hadn’t even read the blurb.  Let’s get real here, people... The name alone is enough reason to read the book.

I, myself, am a strange reader.  I get into what I like to call “reading modes.” I’ll read some steamy smut for a while, move on to some MC novels, then rock out with some rockers, and eventually land in the land of the YA.  That is where EVEN THE MOON HAS SCARS lives. It’s most definitely a YA novel.  Don’t panic. It’s not immature in the slightest.  The story deals with two scared young people. One who wears her scars on her skin, and the other that hides them deep inside. They’re both broken, and we all know how much I love broken people. I want them to glue one another back together. I can’t help it. It’s the hopeless romantic in me.

Lena was born with several heart defects. Bad ones. She’s a miracle baby, and her parents won’t let her forget it. They smother her constantly, rarely letting her out of the house to experience life. What’s the point of surviving if no one will let you live?

Gabriel (Gabe) has a mother who cares more about her career than her son, a crazy ex-girlfriend, and a father that up and left after things got a little… rough. He’s essentially alone in the world, unless you count his grandmother, who is rapidly losing her grip on reality…

Isn’t that what life is about? Collecting scars. Touching people with them? Having them as permanent reminders when people leave?

When Lena locks herself out of the house one cold morning, she finds her way to Gabriel’s grandmother’s garage. Luckily, Gabe is working on an old clunker. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it…) Gabe isn’t able to break Lena back into her house right away. Instead, the two embark on an adventure through Boston – something they’re both unaware that they desperately need.

My only grip is that the book takes place over a 24 hour span of time. I wanted more! I want to know what happens with Lena and Gabe.  We’re given a VERY small taste in the epilogue. If I’m being honest with myself (and you,) Steph ended her book perfectly. It pains me to say that. I grew to love both Lena and Gabriel pretty fiercely.  It’s never easy to say goodbye to characters you’ve grown attached to.

And when your heart is broken, it feels like it’ll never heal. But it’s the heart. It proves to you over and over again that it will.

With every beat it proves that you’re okay.

And Gabe is right.

We both will be.

If you haven’t already guessed it, I recommend EVEN THE MOON HAS SCARS. I even recommend it to those of you that don’t usually read or enjoy YA literature. Steph Campbell’s writing is enough of a reason to jump on board.  It’s buttery smooth. You’ll be half way through the book before you even realize it.
