Reni's Review: HOW TO HOOK A BOOKWORM (How to, #3) by Cassie Mae

 photo 18711456_zpsaaeb2tny.jpg
Getting kissed for a birthday present should not be a big deal. Especially for Brea Mason, who doesn’t think of her best friend, Adam Silver, in any way other than… well, a friend. But after the liplock she can’t seem to get him off her mind. And she has to, because Adam is a senior while she’s stuck in high school for another two years.

Then BAM, the perfect distraction comes along in the form of a new, hot sophomore who actually seems interested in Brea, despite her anti-social personality. And with the stress at home, stress at school, and ignoring the reality of all her friends leaving come June, Brea welcomes the distraction.

But when she sees four fat Fs on her report card, Brea needs a study buddy, and the best candidate is Adam, book nerd and math whiz. So she enlists his help, hoping the birthday kiss was just a fluke. After all, she has a boyfriend now. It should be easy to ignore the butterflies and fizzy feelings that arise with the bookworm… right?

Here’s the thing…

When I’m down, feel like the world is a crap-hole, and people suck; I read a Cassie Mae book.

‘Why?’ you ask.

Cassie has this way of righting the wrongs.

The problem I’m having right now is not with Cassie, it’s with me. ME! I am the problem. I have had a copy of How to Hook a Bookworm for months – MONTHS – and kept pushing it aside to read some other not so feel-good material. Dumb, so dumb.

But I finally read it. In fact, I buddy read it with Ada Frost (She’s amazing, too, btw) and we both agree that Bookworm is not to be missed.

If you’ve read this series in order, you know that Brea is the sister of Levi, who is the best friend of Zoe and boyfriend of Sierra. If you haven’t read them, I’ve just spewed a whole bunch of names at you and effectively scrambled your brain. That’s okay. While I don’t think you HAVE to read the previous books in the series, I’d highly recommend it. Back to Brea… She’s 16, lives in a trailer, worries constantly about how her family will survive, is failing four classes, and wants to run away. If I were facing even half of what she has to, I’d build myself a blanket fort and refuse to come out – ever. The way that Brea saw herself through most of the novel nearly broke me. It’s was hard to read. Everyone is someone of importance. Everyone is intelligent in their own way. This is some serious gut-wrenching material. One particular scene had my stomach in my throat and little tears welling up in my eyes.

Closing my eyes, I suck in a breath and hold it.

I wish for a better heart so someone will want a piece of it.

But there is hope in the form of one 18 year old male – Adam.

Adam is Brea’s bestie - he has been for the last few years - and he’s determined to help her pass her classes while being the shoulder she so desperately needs to lean on. The only problem? Adam is graduating this year. He’ll be off to college before either of them can sneeze, and then what?
Did I mention that there’s a new sexy sophomore at school sniffing around Brea? It’s funny how people realize their feelings when what they want belongs to someone else (or is scheduled to leave the state...)

How to Hook a Bookworm easily makes my Top Five Cassie Mae Reads of All Time list. Betcha didn’t know I have one of those. Well, I do. I love her. L-O-V-E, love. It’s easy to list her as my favorite YA author, because she is. She’s it. If you haven’t read her work, please do. Don’t be dumb like me and let her writing sit around while you grab hold of other reading material.  Read How to Hook a Bookworm or How to Date a Nerd or Reasons I Fell for the Funny Fat Friend or…well, you get the point.

Plus, most of her characters love superheroes. ;)

Cassie Mae (who dons the name Becca Ann on occasion) is the author of a few hundred… okay, maybe not that many… books. Some of which became popular for their quirky titles, characters, and stories. She likes writing about nerds, geeks, the awkward, the fluffy, the short, the shy, the loud, the fun.

Since publishing her bestselling debut, Reasons I Fell for the Funny Fat Friend, she has published and sold books to Random House, Swoon Romance, and Spencer Hill Press. She has a favorite of all her babies, but no, she won’t tell you what it is. (Mainly because it changes depending on the day.)

Along with writing, Cassie likes to binge watch Teen Wolf and The Big Bang Theory. She can quote Harry Potter lines quick as a whip. And she likes kissing her hubby, but only if his facial hair is trimmed. She also likes cheesecake to a very obsessive degree.

She can wait for him at his grandmother’s or…

A few hours, an aluminum valve cover, and some strong coffee later, neither Gabe or Lena can feign disappointment when they race to the station and arrive just as the last train home from Boston is pulling out.

As jaded as he is, Gabe can’t deny the fact that he’s excited to spend the night exploring a city he knows nearly every corner of, with a girl who sees magic in the simplest things.

Lena has been waiting for her tiny world to crack open her entire life. Now that it’s finally happened, she finds the only thing she can focus on is the unexpected tour guide who opens her eyes to possibilities she never imagined.

Admittedly, I am a huge Steph Campbell fan. Granted, most of the novels I’ve read that have adorned her name have been collaborations; that doesn’t mean I love her any less. When I first heard about EVEN THE MOON HAS SCARS I was giddy.  I hadn’t even read the blurb.  Let’s get real here, people... The name alone is enough reason to read the book.

I, myself, am a strange reader.  I get into what I like to call “reading modes.” I’ll read some steamy smut for a while, move on to some MC novels, then rock out with some rockers, and eventually land in the land of the YA.  That is where EVEN THE MOON HAS SCARS lives. It’s most definitely a YA novel.  Don’t panic. It’s not immature in the slightest.  The story deals with two scared young people. One who wears her scars on her skin, and the other that hides them deep inside. They’re both broken, and we all know how much I love broken people. I want them to glue one another back together. I can’t help it. It’s the hopeless romantic in me.

Lena was born with several heart defects. Bad ones. She’s a miracle baby, and her parents won’t let her forget it. They smother her constantly, rarely letting her out of the house to experience life. What’s the point of surviving if no one will let you live?

Gabriel (Gabe) has a mother who cares more about her career than her son, a crazy ex-girlfriend, and a father that up and left after things got a little… rough. He’s essentially alone in the world, unless you count his grandmother, who is rapidly losing her grip on reality…

Isn’t that what life is about? Collecting scars. Touching people with them? Having them as permanent reminders when people leave?

When Lena locks herself out of the house one cold morning, she finds her way to Gabriel’s grandmother’s garage. Luckily, Gabe is working on an old clunker. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it…) Gabe isn’t able to break Lena back into her house right away. Instead, the two embark on an adventure through Boston – something they’re both unaware that they desperately need.

My only grip is that the book takes place over a 24 hour span of time. I wanted more! I want to know what happens with Lena and Gabe.  We’re given a VERY small taste in the epilogue. If I’m being honest with myself (and you,) Steph ended her book perfectly. It pains me to say that. I grew to love both Lena and Gabriel pretty fiercely.  It’s never easy to say goodbye to characters you’ve grown attached to.

And when your heart is broken, it feels like it’ll never heal. But it’s the heart. It proves to you over and over again that it will.

With every beat it proves that you’re okay.

And Gabe is right.

We both will be.

If you haven’t already guessed it, I recommend EVEN THE MOON HAS SCARS. I even recommend it to those of you that don’t usually read or enjoy YA literature. Steph Campbell’s writing is enough of a reason to jump on board.  It’s buttery smooth. You’ll be half way through the book before you even realize it.

I need a button that reads: Broken boys in book are better.  Tessa Marie can write a broken boy. She’s also quite good at slightly broken, almost perfect girls - Ivy League material to be exact. What happens when a homeless boy and a semi perfect girl collide? Perfection, that’s what.

Dean is, you guessed it, homeless. He’s been on the streets for a while now. It beats living in his previous foster home. If sleeping on the cold hard ground, scraping and scrounging for money, and looking over your shoulder at each turn is better than you’re foster home, it must have been atrocious.  And from all accounts, it was. Dean’s resigned himself to the fact that this is his life. Occasionally he’ll dream of bigger and better things, but he squashes them almost instantly. When you live the way that he does, hope can be a dangerous thing.

Anna is the epitome of good. She gets straight A’s, volunteers in her free time, and never ruffles any feathers.  She’s closed off from the world in a way that pushes her to excel.  Her mother is almost non-existent, her father IS non-existent, and her brother got the hell out of dodge as soon as he turned 18.  While she’s not homeless, she is definitely on her own.

When Dean wonders into the soup kitchen where Anna volunteers, he seems somewhat familiar.  Anna’s determined to get to know him even at the expense of her own heart. Try as he may, Dean can’t keep Anna away.

“A place is just that, a place. But a home. A home is where your heart is. And this Thanksgiving it’ll be at all three.”

Home is Where You Are was so much more than I expected it to be. I feel head over heels for this unlikely pair.  Tessa is an amazing story teller.  She weaves her words in such a way that it makes it almost impossible to stop reading. I was up well into the night reading this one, because I simply could not put it down. She sucked me in from the very first chapter, the very first page.  I can’t wait to see what she comes out with next. If you’re a fan of YA, this book needs to be on your TBR list.

Tessa Marie lives in the same town she grew up in on Long Island, NY with her long time boyfriend and their fish. Under her real name, Theresa Paolo, she released her debut novel (NEVER) AGAIN, a NA romance, in Fall 2013 with Berkley (Penguin) and (ONCE) AGAIN released this summer. She is also the coauthor of the Amazon bestseller KING SIZED BEDS AND HAPPY TRAILS and BEACH SIDE BEDS AND SANDY PATHS, a YA contemporary series. She has a hard time accepting the fact she’s nearing thirty, and uses her characters to relive the best and worst years of her
life. She put her love of writing on hold while she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Dowling College. When she’s not writing, she’s behind a camera, reading, or can be found on Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook.

“So what happened?” Lena asks. She takes another sip of her drink, then rests her hand on the the laminate countertop near mine. I want to focus on that. How close she is. How close she’s allowing me to be to her for the first time tonight. What I don’t want to be doing is talking about my ex-girlfriend. "Why aren’t you together anymore?"

Making love to her was like sleeping with a starfish.

She loved the thrill of a political protest more than she actually loved me.

She was happy to see me hauled off to jail for her cause, because it added a little drama to her life.

“I don’t know, I guess you can only make exceptions for people for so long before they all just sound like excuses.”

“You, or her?”

I suck in a quick breath before answering,“Maybe both?”

She stares down at her wrist, spinning the blue beads on her bracelet as she says, “But you loved her.”

It isn’t a question.

I nod slowly. “I did.”

“And now--”

“Now, I’ve moved on.” I shrug.

“Have you really?” Lena asks. “Because when she hugged you--”

I don’t really understand why we have to talk about this. So we ran into Jemma, it doesn’t mean the entire relationship needs to be rehashed over pie. Doing that will only lead to me having to discuss my arrest, and that’s not something I want to talk about with the girl who looks at me with those big brown eyes that scream trust and understanding and all the things I don’t even come close to deserving from someone.

I turn my barstool toward her, brushing her knee with my own. The simple touch is more electric and intimate than sex with my starfish ex.

“Look, Lena,” I say, as I wrap a straw wrapper around my index finger. “This isn’t something I want to get into.”

“You’ve asked me a bunch of questions tonight,” she presses.

That’s fair. I’ve spent the last several hours trying to drag every bit of information I can out of this crazy mysterious, beautiful girl.

Our server comes by the table to refill our drinks. “Can I just get the check?” I ask, hopeful she'll just let it drop after a change of venue.

“I’m not finished,” Lena says, motioning to her half-eaten piece of pie.

“I’m ready to go,” I say.

“Oh, because I asked you a question you don’t want to answer now?” she demands.

“No, Lena. I’m just ready to go.”

“Liar,” she mumbles under her breath. It’d be cute if it weren't so damn accurate.

I pull out my wallet as soon as our check arrives and hand over my debit card.

“I’m not a liar," I say, it comes out more harsh than I intend. "It’s just--being in love doesn’t define you. No matter what romantic idea you have in your head, love doesn’t go to the most deserving. It's not something you collect, like, the more the better. Love isn't a trinket passed down. It’s a wound left behind. Love changes you, but not always in a good way. It’s a goddamn scar.”

Zoe has a great pair of legs, perky boobs, and wears exactly what she needs to show it all off. She works hard for the easy sleazy ‘you only wish you were me’ reputation, burying who she really is—an all-out nerd.

The only time Zoe gets to be herself is when she hides under her comforter to read X-Men comics, sending jealousy stabs at everyone who attends Comic-Con. Keeping up her popular rep is too important, and she’s so damn insecure to care about the consequences. But when Zoe’s sister takes her car for a ‘crash and burn into a tree’ joyride, her parents get her a replacement. A manual. Something she doesn’t know how to operate, but her next door neighbor Zak sure as heck does.

Zak’s a geek to the core, shunned by everyone in school for playing Dungeons and Dragons at lunch and wearing “Use the Force” t-shirts. And Zoe’s got it bad for the boy. Only Zak doesn’t want Popular Zoe. He wants Geek Zoe.

She has to shove her insecurities and the fear of dropping a few rungs on the social ladder aside to prove to Zak who she really is and who she wants to be… if she can figure it out herself.

Here we go again with this big, goofy, stupid looking grin. I can’t wipe it off my face. Trust me, I’ve tried. My husband is beginning to worry about my sanity. It. Just. Will. Not. Leave. My. Face! My cheeks literally hurt. Cassie Mae, you are a frakking genius! The way you write… The storylines you dream up... All of it serves to further my opinion that YOU are a nerdy mastermind, hell bent on taking the literary world by storm. (Ha. Storm made me think of X-men which totally fits in with the storyline. Maybe you’re not the only genius running around out here in cyber space.)

Yeah. I’m a total closeted nerd.
I’m not cool with pity glares in the hallways, painful jabs, and social scars. No thanks.
It’s much easier to keep my true nature hidden beneath layers of eyeliner, skimpy outfits, and even I must admit to myself, a rockin’ body.

Zoe is living a lie. Literally. Being queen of the nerds in middle school wasn’t cutting it. The summer before high school changed all that. Armed with enough romantic teen comedies to entertain a troop of 12 year olds, Zoe begins her research into non-dorkdom. Leaving behind her nerd ways meant leaving behind her friends, too - one in particular, Zak, the nerd next door – king of the dorks.

Problem – Zoe is in freakin’ love with Zak. Like, flat out, head over flipping heels, love. All her booty shaking and underwear flashing, doesn’t seem to faze him, and keeping up her “popular persona” is becoming a chore she could do without. It’s exhausting trying to hide your obsession with X-men, Harry Potty and Star Trek. If only she could let her freak flag fly, but being her dorky self is just too scary. What will people say? How will she survive? Then there’s Zak… Maybe being a dork is worth it; maybe being herself is worth it, if she gets to do it with him.

I’m a freaking horrible person who made out with some random guy before stumbling after a guy who I’m face over feet for and I don’t know why. And I just… I miss being me.

I cannot give this book high enough praise. We’ve all been to high school, and maybe some of you are there now. It’s one of the best and worst times in a young person’s life. It’s so easy to feel insecure about yourself. If I could go back 14 years, (Holy hell! 14 years…) to my senior year of high school, I’d tell my very apprehensive self, to just be, me. To do what makes me happy, and forget about everyone else. AND…that’s exactly what I wanted to scream into my kindle for more than half of this book. If people don’t like you for who you are, they’re obviously not worth your time. Life is too short for that nonsense. It makes me think of that quote… You know, the one by Bernard M. Brauch.
“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.”

Just like my dad said, there will always be people who don’t understand who I am or what I choose to do with my life. But screw ‘em. I totally get what I’m about to lose today when I walk through those doors, But unlike yesterday I won’t let the whispers and the laughs get to me.

It never ceases to amaze me how much I can get out of a little ol’ novel. In each of her books, Cassie Mae challenges us to think deeper, to love harder and to accept ourselves, warts and all - especially in How to Date a Nerd. I have yet to read anything of hers that I haven’t fallen in love with. She has a beautiful voice, and I am so glad she feels driven to share it with us all!

I don’t care if everyone thinks I’m a friggin’ nerd. I am a nerd, but I like it. I like this. All of it. All of him. And he likes me too.

How to Date a Nerd did not disappoint. In fact, it left me with the need to confess something. I… um… Geez, this is harder than I thought it would be. I… I play… oh, come on woman, spit. It. Out. Okay, fine. I play World of Warcraft occasionally. Happy now, world?! You know my deep dark secret and I blame it all on this fabulously written, fun loving, uplifting piece of brilliance.

Cassie Mae (sometimes writes as Becca Ann ;)) is a nerd to the core from Utah, who likes to write about other nerds who find love. Her angel children and perfect husband fan her and feed her grapes while she clacks away on the keyboard. Then she wakes up from that dream world and manages to get a few words on the computer while the house explodes around her. She loves friend requests :) And talking about Teen Wolf.
