Sarah's Review of A PLACE IN THE SUN by R.S. Grey

When her mother’s incessant matchmaking hits an all-time high, Georgie Archibald does what any sensible woman would do: she flees the country.
Seeking refuge in the picturesque seaside village of Vernazza, Italy, Georgie’s only plan is to lie low, gorge herself on gelato, and let the wine and waves wash her troubles away...that is until she wakes up in a bed that belongs to the most romantic-looking man she’s ever seen.
Gianluca.

After going out of his way to rescue her, the former London financier turned mysterious recluse makes it clear that despite acting as her white knight, he has no plans to co-star in her fairytale.
But Georgie isn’t asking for his heart—she’s merely intrigued.

After all, Gianluca isn’t just gorgeous—tall and tan from days spent in the sun—his touch sets her world on fire. With him, Georgie experiences the most intoxicating passion she’s ever known, and it only takes a few steamy nights for her to realize that sometimes running away from trouble is the best way to find it.

A Place in the Sun is the latest standalone by R.S. Grey. It has interconnected characters from Settling the Score but they have no dialogue in this story.

Georgie is escaping London aristocratic life to find peace with herself in Italy. She's got her sights set on Italy and its Riviera Coast in hopes that she'll find love and lots of gelato.

"She was an agonizing sort of beautiful, the kind that reached out and demanded everyone take notice. When she smiled, the world smiled with her, and more than once, I found myself wishing I was the man she deserved to be with, the one she had come to Italy to find."

A chance encounter has Gianluca meeting Georgie on her first day in the coastal town of Vernazza. He's looking for the opposite of love, and wants only friendship from Georgie.

Georgie has a great time breaking Gianluca's rough exterior and they find themselves in an easy friendship before their relationship develops into more.

"Vernazza didn’t feel like home. Gianluca felt like home. Our relationship, the ease and beauty of it was the comfort I craved."

The angst is strong in this one. Strong! R.S. Grey's signature comedy shines in Georgie's dialogue. She's an easy character to love. It's fun getting into her quirky head while trying to break down Gianluca's walls.

As much as I enjoyed the banter in A Place in the Sun, there was just something I didn't love. I'm still trying to place it. Maybe because there was such a long build up to their "aha" moment, I got kind of bored? Grey's writing is stellar as always, but I felt that something was just missing from the story. All in all, I'd definitely recommend A Place in the Sun. You can tell the author had passion for writing the beautiful scenes in which the story was set.

I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things... everyday.

I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors are Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I'm a comedy geek and love all things "funny". Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.

SUGAR FREE by Sawyer Bennett Blog Tour: Sarah's Review!

sugarfreetourbanner

Sela and Beck’s deliciously sinful tale of sex, lies, and vengeance reaches its explosive conclusion in the final chapter of Sawyer Bennett’s Sugar Bowl trilogy, which began with the novels Sugar Daddy and Sugar Rush.

For years Sela Halstead dreamed of revenge, but the quest for payback has been anything but sweet. Now, once again, she finds herself at the mercy of Jonathon Townsend, his hands crushing the very breath from her body. And even though she escapes with her life, Sela fears she may never recover. In desperate need of shelter and comfort, she runs to the one man she can trust.

Beckett North has stood by Sela since the beginning. But can he handle the brutal truth? Beck will do anything to protect what is his—and make no mistake, Sela belongs to him, heart and soul. The passion between them runs hot, even as their world begins to unravel. With the legacy of his ruthless business partner hanging in the balance, Beck stands to lose everything: his fortune, his family, his freedom. But each touch of Sela’s mouth on his skin, her nails down his back, makes it harder to let her go—and it might not even be his choice to make.

The Sugar Bowl Series is a romantic suspense trilogy, and cannot be read as standalones.

3.5 stars for Sawyer Bennett's final book in her Sugar Bowl series. I enjoyed the ending to the trilogy, but I honestly just felt it was rushed. I'm thinking this could have easily been one book instead of three. The cliffhangers were there and perfect, but the last book just went too fast.

Beck and Sela had so many loose ends to tie up, and when they did, it was as if the book was in fast forward. Overall, it's worth the read. Maybe if I'd read them all at once instead of over time, I would have enjoyed them that much more.

I did enjoy this spin on romance from Sawyer. She's known for her explicit writing, but murder and deception are a new spin for her and she did it justice - fictionally.

author-photo-sawyer-bennettAbout the Author: Since the release of her debut contemporary romance novel, Off Sides, in January 2013, Sawyer Bennett has released more than 30 books and has been featured on both the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists on multiple occasions.

A reformed trial lawyer from North Carolina, Sawyer uses real life experience to create relatable, sexy stories that appeal to a wide array of readers. From new adult to erotic contemporary romance, Sawyer writes something for just about everyone.

Sawyer likes her Bloody Mary’s strong, her martinis dirty, and her heroes a combination of the two. When not bringing fictional romance to life, Sawyer is a chauffeur, stylist, chef, maid, and personal assistant to a very active toddler, as well as full-time servant to two adorably naughty dogs. She believes in the good of others, and that a bad day can be cured with a great work-out, cake, or a combination of the two.

The New York Times bestselling Driven series continues with a story about finding love where you least expect it...

Behind the wheel, racing champion Zander Donavan is at the top of his game. But after too much excess in his personal life, he’s forced to step away. He needs to accomplish something all on his own—outside of his famous father, Colton Donavan’s, shadow.

Getty Caster is running away from the abuse that clouds her past. She thinks she’s found the perfect escape—until she discovers a stranger in the beachside cottage she’d been promised. He’s undeniably sexy, but she’s there to heal. Alone.

Before long though, fighting with each other turns into fighting their attraction. And giving into desire sets off a chain reaction that has their pasts colliding. With an unexpected love on the line, can they overcome the fallout to build a future?

down shift teaser 1.png

Down Shift is the latest standalone in K. Bromberg's Driven series. The characters in her three previous books don't connect with this, but I recommend reading the original Driven Trilogy to get to know Zander's story before he's an adult.

Zander Donovan is the bad boy of Indy racing. Adopted son of legend Colton Donovan, he's untouchable. His tragic past collides with his present and he spirals into reckless actions and a deep depression.

Getty Caster is running from her old life, learning to live on her own independently. Getty and Zander meet while unknowingly staying at the same house. They learn to live with each other, fight with each other and subsequently fall in love.

I was SO looking forward to Down Shift. Zander held a special place in my heart while reading Rylee and Colton's books. I loved Zander and his emotions. He's the broken hero we all love and he lives up to it. Getty, though. As much as I tried, I just couldn't connect with her. She comes from a well-to-do background, has daddy issues and an emotionally abusive ex-husband. I just didn't love her.

I'm thinking (personally, in my humble opinion) that the Driven series needs to end. Driven, Crashed and Fueled were great. The subsequent spin-offs were just lacking. When it's taken me three days to get thirty percent into a book, it's hard to even want to finish it. That's how Down Shift was for me. I'm sure I'm the unpopular opinion here, but that's just me. I'm not discounting K. Bromberg's writing, it's smart and thoughtful. This story just didn't pull me like the originals did.

kristy bromberg.jpg
New York Times Bestselling author K. Bromberg writes contemporary novels that contain a mixture of sweet, emotional, a whole lot of sexy and a little bit of real. She likes to write strong heroines and damaged heroes who we love to hate and hate to love.

She’s a mixture of most of her female characters: sassy, intelligent, stubborn, reserved, outgoing, driven, emotional, strong, and wears her heart on her sleeve. All of which she displays daily with her husband and three children where they live in Southern California.

On a whim, K. Bromberg decided to try her hand at this writing thing. Since then she has written The Driven Series (Driven, Fueled, Crashed, Raced, Aced), the standalone Driven Novels (Slow Burn, Sweet Ache, Hard Beat, and Down Shift (Releasing 10/4/16)), and a short story titled UnRaveled. She is currently finishing up Sweet Cheeks a standalone novel out at the end of 2016.

Her plans for 2017 include a sports romance duet (The Player (#1) and The Catch (#2)) and the Everyday Heroes series (Cuffed (#1), Combust (#2), and Cockpit (#3). She’s also writing a novella for the 1,001 Dark Night series that will be out in February 2017.She loves to hear from her readers so make sure you check her out on social media.

JUNKIE(Broken Dolls, #1) by Heather C. Leigh Release Day Blitz: Reni's Review, Excerpt + Giveaway!

JUNKIE_RELEASE_BLITZ.jpg

Junkie-ebook (1).jpg
I'm a heroin addict. A junkie. A whore. I'll do anything to get my next fix.

Anything.

Including walking right onto the property of Austin's most ruthless and feared drug lord to beg for some H. I don't know his name, only that people call him Boss. Oh, and that he won't think twice to put a bullet in my head.

But like I said, I'll do anything to get my next fix. Even if it costs me my life.

Or changes it forever.

junkiejaggerad.jpg

After reading the blurb for Junkie, I decided to give it a try. I’m usually not overly eager to dive into dark novels, but this one peeked my interest. An addict that falls in love with a drug king pin. Sign me up.

But here’s the thing…

Junkie wasn’t overly dark.

I actually had trouble imagining Boss as the boss, and even more trouble imagining him as some sort of bad ass Texan. He gave in a lot. The man made more empty threats than any drug lord should. Heads should have rolled. In my very humble opinion, his right hand man should have been strapped to a chair and had rubber bands wrapped around his testicles a couple of times. But no…Boss just sort of growled at him and occasionally threatened him with the blade of a knife. He even let Miri get away with way more than she should have.

A little more back story would have been nice. We have a little more insight into Miri’s life than Boss’s, but even that lacking. I’m guessing Heather will address this more thoroughly in Jagger, the next installment in this twisted tale.

Since this is obviously part of a series (Junkie and Jagger) it should go without saying that Miri and Boss’s story doesn’t come to a beautifully wrapped conclusion in this book. I’m eager to see what happens next but wasn’t left craving a conclusion.

Overall, I was expecting something darker, deeper, harder. While Junkie was a good, easy read, it was drug lord light. That’s probably good for people like me, ones who are fairly new to the dark read world.

If you’re a hardcore, balls to the wall, give it to me dark and dirty type reader, this book might leave you slightly unsatisfied. If you’re into the idea of a dark read, but would like it to be a little less bloody, disturbing, and extreme, by all means, please pick up this book.

Was it enjoyable? Yes.
Was it worth my time? Yes.
Was it everything I expected it to me? Not exactly.
Would I recommend it? Yes, yes I would.

Junkie was good, but missing something to push it over the edge into the land of great. The story was entertaining and the characters likable. I just wish the author had taken that additional step into the dark.

Boss forces Miri in the shower to get clean

Fighting the intense, gut-clenching fear, I tightened my grip, using his strong muscles to keep me upright as he washed my feet. The cloth skimmed up my legs one at a time, his hands scrubbing over and over as the foam rinsed away days of dirt and grime. The boss skipped my clothed midsection, straightened to his full height, and repeated the process with my arms, spending extra time on my dirt-caked hands and nails, and the track marks on my arms, only moving on when my skin glowed pink.
Next, he lifted my long red hair off my neck and slid the cloth across the top of my back and shoulders, then around the front to wash the exposed part of my chest where my tank top dipped low. I glanced down as his enormous, bruised and scabbed hands worked over my skin, only then realizing my white tank was completely transparent and I wasn’t wearing a bra. Instinctively, my hands flew up to cover my breasts. He chuckled, a smooth, deep sound so seductive it could easily charm a roomful of people and melt every pair of panties in a five-mile radius.
“A little too late for that, doll. Seein’ as I’ve already got a good look at everything.”
Something about his cocky drawl, the crooked smirk on his face, and that single raised eyebrow felt like a challenge. My courage, boosted by the decadent lull of my best friend, heroin, had me meeting his gaze head-on. Determined to show the boss I wasn’t a cowering scaredy-cat, I fingered the hem, tugged the wet tank over my head, and tossed it to the floor with a loud splat. The man’s eyes widened, which only fueled my desire to make him eat his stupid words. Still staring directly into those sapphire eyes, I stuck my thumbs in the waistband of my shorts and shoved them down, stepped out, and kicked them aside. Completely naked, I stood my ground and raised my own brow in return, hands on my hips.
Our eyes were locked a few more seconds before he threw his head back and burst out laughing. The action made him look years younger than I originally believed. “You are somethin’ else, you know that, doll?”
Instead of answering, I snatched the soapy washcloth from his hand and quickly finished washing my newly exposed skin.
“Here.”
Jerk.
The boss scrambled to catch the cloth I whipped at his chest before turning to storm out of the shower. I yelped when he grabbed me by the arm and yanked me toward him. The blazing heat of his chest was pressed against the bare skin of my back and I trembled from head to toe. The boss held tight and lowered his mouth to my ear.
“First, don’t ever fucking throw shit at me again.” Chills broke out across my skin at his angry threat. “You will not disrespect me in my own house, especially after I fucking took you in instead of killing you the second you set foot on my property. Got it?” When I didn’t answer, he squeezed my upper arms until I whimpered.
“Y-yes. I get it.” I struggled to keep from screaming out of pure terror. What was I thinking? Mouthing off to a drug lord while naked in his shower and a house full of his goons one floor below. I couldn’t possibly be more vulnerable.
After digging his fingers in for another long moment to prove he was in charge, the boss released me and spun me around as he picked up another bottle. “Your hair is fucking disgusting. It needs to be washed.” He wrinkled his nose in distaste and once more, shame flooded me with heat. This man had a way of making me feel as though I was less than human. He held out the bottle, shaking it in my face. “Either you do it, or I do, doll. But you’re not getting out of here until you’ve cleaned the junkie stench off.”
The backs of my eyes stung and my face caught fire. I couldn’t look at him as I took the bottle and poured some shampoo into a shaky hand. He washed himself quickly then stood with his arms crossed over his wide chest as I lathered my hair and rinsed off under the spray.
“Again,” he demanded. I bit my lip to keep from telling him to fuck off and did as I was told.
When the last suds swirled down the drain, the boss was silent as he reached around me and cut off the water. He carefully folded the washcloth, laid it on the edge of the sink, and stepped out of the shower enclosure. He handed me a towel, and picked one up for himself. I tried not to watch as he rubbed the fluffy white cloth over all of those tan muscles, but it was futile. Staring, I was mesmerized by the sight as the boss wrapped the towel around his waist and shucked his wet briefs from underneath. I gulped, knowing he was now naked beneath the soft terrycloth, a mere foot away.
When the silence became uncomfortable, I clutched my own towel to my chest, dug up what little courage I had left, and turned to face him with a huff. “We showered together and I don’t even know your name.”
He quirked that damn eyebrow again and smiled, white teeth gleaming in the middle of his dark designer stubble. If I didn’t know he was a widely feared drug lord and a pushy, high-handed, scary motherfucker, I’d find his expression almost charming.
“Boss.”
“I know you’re The Boss, I want to know your name.”
“My name is Boss,” he repeated. “Or Boss Man. Either one works.” As if he didn’t have a care in the world, as if forcing unwilling women into a shower were an everyday occurrence, he shrugged and brushed a hand through his wet hair.
I rolled my eyes. “Fine, don’t tell me.” This guy was so damn frustrating. He shot me up with H, dumped me in the shower, humiliated me, washed me, but wouldn’t tell me his name. Whatever. I turned my back to him.
Big mistake.
Two large hands wrapped around my shoulders, and I was jerked back against his body once more. Both of us were currently clad only in towels, his slung low around his waist and mine tucked under my armpits. There wasn’t as much skin-on-skin contact as in the shower, but this felt much more intimate. Slowly, Boss spun me around to face him, and I had to muffle a frightened cry. His blue eyes were narrowed to slits, nostrils flaring. The transformation from playful to furious was immediate and absolutely terrifying. For the first time since I’d showed up on his lawn, I was truly, without a doubt, scared shitless.
This man, the one in front of me—so different from the man who laughed in the shower—is what I expected from the drug lord I heard rumors about. Horrible rumors of unspeakable acts of violence. A ruthless man to be respected and feared.
Boss pressed the length of his half-naked body against me, and growled, teeth glinting behind curled lips. “That’s the second time you turned your back on me after mouthing off. I’m only going to say this once more, Miri, so listen carefully.” He lowered his head and his breath ghosted across my neck. I shuddered and a whimper escaped my throat, the result of a horrifying combination of lust and fear. “You are my guest. You snuck onto my property and you’re goddamn lucky I didn’t let Milo shoot you on sight. No, I saved you, took your ass in, gave you your fucking heroin, and washed a couple weeks’ worth of filth and scum off of you using my very expensive body wash that, incidentally, I never share with anyone. I expect you to be grateful for my hospitality and treat me with some goddamn motherfucking respect, got it?” His hands tightened around my arms incrementally as he spoke. His message was quite clear as his touch became more and more painful. I knew his thick fingers would leave bruises on my pale, fragile skin.
Legs shaking, I nearly pissed myself when faced with the lethal side of this man.
“I want to hear you say you understand, Miri.” Boss let go and stepped back until his eyes bored holes into me from beneath heavy brows.
Filled with terror, my heart pounded and my breath caught in my lungs, rendering me speechless. His eyes narrowed, not happy with my silence. Somehow, I managed to choke out two words.

“I-I understand.”

Heather C. Leigh is the author of the Amazon best selling Famous series. She likes to write about the 'dark' side of fame. The part that the public doesn't get to see, how difficult it is to live in a fishbowl and how that affects relationships.

Heather was born and raised in New England and currently lives outside Atlanta, GA with her husband, 2 kids, and French Bulldog, Shelby.

She loves the Red Sox, the Patriots, and anything chocolate (but not white chocolate, everyone knows it's not real chocolate so it doesn't count) and has left explicit instructions in her will to have her ashes snuck into Fenway Park and sneakily sprinkled all over while her family enjoys beer, hot dogs, and a wicked good time.

My favorite authors are Dan Wells, Ken Follett, and Stephen King.

Praise for Reckless Hearts

"Reckless Hearts is sexy, sweet, and the perfect summer read! Melody Grace has outdone herself!” - Corinne Michaels, USA Today bestselling author

"Sweet, sexy deliciousness. Reckless Hearts had me in a constant swoon! This is a summer must read!" - A.L. Jackson, NYT Bestselling Author

I dove into Reckless Hearts headfirst and completely blind. This was my first tango with Ms. Grace, and I’d say we made pretty good dance partners.

I absolutely loved the beginning scene…

Picture it:
Girl doesn’t get job.
Girl goes into bar to drown her sorrows in a glass of something –anything – with alcohol in it.
Girl’s purse is stolen…
Along comes boy, a complete stranger, to save the day.
And then the police arrive…
It’s fun. It’s endearing. It’s real.

Hey, it could happen.

Then things got a little crazy.

Will (the knight in shining armor) up and moves to Delilah’s (the girl who needed rescuing) hometown, because she happened to mention it was an awesome place to live. A bit creepy, if you ask me…

Anyway…

Will is running from something. I’m sure you deduced that. We don’t find out what until the end, and of course, Delilah has an issue with it. She’s pretty headstrong and independent.  It was a nice change of pace to have a heroine anti-relationship, rather than always having the hero more of the commitmentphobe. News of the what didn’t go over well (naturally) and there’s trouble in paradise.

Reckless Hearts follows the same formula as most romance novels. Nothing wrong with that, it’s just a bit predictable. Sometimes predictable is good, like when you’re sitting on a beach somewhere with a fruity umbrella clad drink. It’s not a heart wrenching, gut pulverizing novel, and it’s also not an overly light and fluffy piece. I think this story is somewhere in the middle. It didn’t blow me away, but I wasn’t let down either. Melody Grace can count on me reading another of her novels, so I’d consider this one a win.
