Tonic by Staci Hart Release Day Blitz + Sarah's Review!

Joel Anderson doesn’t take anything seriously.

Not his relationships, which have been few and far between since his brutal divorce. Not the drama of working in a tattoo parlor, which seems to be around every corner. When things get him down, he smiles and cracks a joke. But he’s not the kind of man you cross, or you’ll find yourself at the wrong end of his fists.

Annika Belousov takes everything seriously.

Like her job as a reality television producer, given that she typically has something to prove. Or her love life, which is defined by a series of requirements — affluent, ambitious, accomplished, to name a few. Definitely her family, who worked their whole lives to afford her every opportunity, a sacrifice she doesn’t take lightly. When she’s tapped to produce a reality show at Joel’s shop, she doesn’t think twice, just goes in for the kill, as if there were any other way.

The second Annika walks into Joel’s shop, he makes it his mission to crack her open, but she’s not having it. He’s all wrong — too crass, too hairy, too un-serious. But it doesn’t take her long to find out there’s more to him than smirks and tattoos. And what she finds could put her career and his heart on the line.

Not that Joel cares. Because for the first time in a long time, he’s found his tonic.

Tonic is Staci Hart's latest standalone. It's a spin-off of her Bad Habits series. A few characters interconnect, but it won't hurt to read it by itself.

Annika Belusov is a first generation Russian-American. She's married to her job and would do anything for her family. She's goal-oriented and has no time for relationships. Once she meets Joel Anderson, that all changes

Joel is the owner of the Tonic tattoo shop in New York City. He's been in the business for nearly two decades. He was burned by his ex-wife and has locked his heart from relationships. After he meets Annika, he'll do whatever it takes to get and keep her in his life.

Tonic kind of fell flat for me. This is the fifth book of Staci Hart's that I've read and it just didn't hit me like the others. I didn't find much in the way of romantic comedy as I did as an angst-filled romance. As a tattoo collector, I was over the moon to learn about Joel's story. I love the tattoo shop scene and lifestyle. As someone who knows many shop owners, it's very uncommon for an artist to call their tattoo machine a "gun." Some artists even find it derogatory. Call me a snob, but that bothered me.

I'm not discounting Staci's writing and I'm probably the unpopular reviewer of the bunch since it's not super favorable. It just wasn't a hit for me. I'm sure I'll keep reading Staci's work because she does keep it fresh and fun, but Tonic just didn't do it for me.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life: a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, even though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f and ends with k.

From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's sleeping, cleaning, or designing graphics.

F*CK OF THE IRISH by Celia Aaron Release Day Blitz: Excerpt + Reni's Review!

Eamon is my crush, the one guy I can’t stop thinking about. His Irish accent, toned body, and sparkling eyes captivated me the second I saw him. But since he slept with my roommate, who claims she still loves him, he’s been off limits. Despite my prohibition on dating him, he has other ideas. Resisting him is the key to keeping my roommate happy, but giving in may bring me more pleasure than I ever imagined.

I sipped my drink as he took a long swig of his beer. He came away with a foam mustache, and I had the craziest impulse to lick it. I smiled and stifled my laugh.
“What?” He raised his eyebrows at me. “Something on my face, love?”
“No.” I shook my head. “Not a thing?”
“Nothing?”
“Nope. Everything is totally normal.”
He took another swig, even more foam collecting on his upper lip.
“How about now?”
I giggled. “Perfectly fine. I see nothing amiss.”
He leaned in, the beer a mix of sweet and rich on his breath. “Care for a taste?”
My heart leapt into my throat and I stared into his eyes, the blue even deeper in the dimness of the bar.
He pulled me closer, his fingertips pressing into my shoulder. Before I could back away, his mouth was on mine, his lips firm and warm. I clutched his shirt as he pushed me into the wall, caging me with his muscular body. My breath was gone, stolen by him as he licked along the seam of my lips, asking for entrance. He slid a hand down to my lower back and pulled me against him, pressing my breasts hard into his chest. I gasped at the friction on my nipples and he plunged his tongue into me.
I moaned into his mouth, and he growled a low response. His tongue mastered mine, and he eclipsed any thoughts I may have had about propriety or people watching. There was only him, his mouth, his body, the heat he stoked inside me.

When your roommate has declared that the hunky Irish guy you've been crushing on is her property, what's a girl to do? Drool over him from afar, of course. But what happens when said Irishman reveals that he wants you, too? Things start to get a little complicated in this quasi love triangle.

If I'm going to be brutally honest, I don't think F*ck of the Irish was for me. I initially signed up because, well, I'm Irish and figured, what the hell. Novellas and short stories tend to make me a little nervous. There's always the chance that they'll be a lack of story with a crazy amount of sex, and we all know how much I value the story aspect. F*ck of the Irish left me feeling incomplete. While expected aspects of the story were addressed, they weren't fully explored. And, oh, the roommate... She called dibs on Mr. Irish after sleeping with him ONCE. I don't even think they ever actually dated. If that doesn't scream that your roommate has a screw loose, I don't know what does...

Anyway, F*ck of the Irish is a very quick, sexy read. There's just not much substance to it.

Sarah's Review of ROGUE (Dead Man;s Ink, #2) by Callie Hart

Rogue (Dead Man's Ink, #2)
When people get too close to me, they wind up dead. Blood. Bullet holes. Stab wounds. I’ve kept my identity secret to protect the ones I love, but now the most dangerous man in my world knows exactly who I am… And he’s coming for me.

Hector Ramirez has brought war to my doorstep, but he won’t win.

I’ll fight to defend the vulnerable.

I’ll kill to protect my club.

But I’ll die to save the woman I love.

Rogue is book two in the Dead Man's Ink Series and is not a standalone novel. After months of waiting, we finally have more to Rebel and Sophia's story.

I'm prefacing this review by saying that Callie Hart has been one of my favorite dark romance/suspense authors since I began my reading journey. Book one in this series, Rebel held my attention and kept me on the edge of my seat. Rogue was the complete opposite for me. It's a very short novel and it took me almost three days to read which is very uncommon for me. It was very slow moving for me, story-wise.

Rebel and Sophia's volatile relationship reaches a new level when they declare their true feelings for each other. Their love is true and great. I really enjoy their relationship. And the sex is hot.

I just felt that the rest of the story was very slow and a lot more of the same. Maybe because we know of the same villains from Callie's Blood & Roses series?  It's roughly the same timeline. I just felt bored with it and had a hard time finishing. With that said, I'm not discounting thus experience. I believe in Callie's writing abilities and am committed to the story and her future works.

Sarah's Review of LUCA (I love the way you lie, #1) by Gina Whitney

 photo 23561787_zpslesu6nng.jpg

“Anger is like a thorn in the heart...the roar of my courage and the cold sweat of my fear.” ~Luca

Pyromania is an impulse control disorder [1] in which individuals repeatedly fail to resist impulses to deliberately start fires, [1] in order to relieve tension or for instant gratification.

Damon Luca, or Luca as they called him. I thought of him more as Damien, the fucking devil within these walls that now is my life. Dark, broody, and deadly to any woman. Mind-blowing, soul-shaking, raw sex appeal. He was a tall statured boy with broad shoulders and a pair of green eyes that set my soul on fire. His inky black hair framed his hard, chiseled features. He had the type of body that had no business being on a seventeen-year-old. I knew that once he fully developed, he'd be nothing short of drop-dead gorgeous. As I said...deadly on the eyes...and dangerous for your heart.

My name is Allison. I met Luca through an unfortunate event when we were younger. I’m now twenty-four, and this is my story. My fucked up life. It's not a pretty one. Then again, the most interesting ones aren't...are they? This isn't your usual love story. Anything but. There are no blue skies, rainbows, or unicorns. Only him...my own personal arsonist. He had the ability to set my panties on fire, leave my body smoldering, and turn my heart into burning embers. He scared the hell out of me, made me feel. He opened my eyes to the world of twisted love. But love no less. This scary, beautiful man stole my heart from a young, tender age and refused to give it back. Here’s our story…

This story is deep, dark, and deals with real scars and growth because of them.

I was so looking forward to reading and reviewing Luca.  I've been waiting for months since Gina first announced it and I loved her books, Saving Abel and Forgiving Gia.  With that being said, Luca was severely lacking in my eyes.  I truly couldn't connect with Allison and Luca's characters and I'm still confused as to why that is.

"My name is Allison.  And this is my story.  It's not a pretty one.  Then again, the most interesting ones aren't...are they?  This isn't your usual love story.  There are no blue skies, rainbows, or unicorns.  Only him...my own person fire-starter."

Allison and Luca meet in a rehab/treatment facility as teenagers.  There is an insta-love/attraction vibe going on for both of them.  Allison is recovering from a sexual trauma and Luca is trying to overcome pyromania.  There's not much as far as therapy for the issues they're experiencing.  I guess I was looking for more of their back-stories.  Why is Luca a pyromaniac?  Why did Allison's parents send her to a treatment facility?  She's known as the "emo girl" but I feel like we need more about her.

"She grounded me.  Took the breath out of me.  She is my light.  My spark.  The need to be her sentinel...her guardian...her everything was suffocating."

Seven years later (in part two) Luca and Allison haven't seen each other since treatment.  They've never gotten over their love for one another but she's trying to move on and Luca is determined to find his way back to her.  They find each other and all is well.  Insta-happiness.  At 94%, I knew something was going to happen and it did.  The ending felt completely rushed and not well thought-out.  The book ended with me longing for more of this story.  I'm sure it will have another installment, at least I hope so but there was no "to be continued..." to be seen.

I really hope Gina gives us more of the story besides Oliver's (Allison's best friend) book.  Luca and Allison need more and how it ended did not sit well with me at all.  I also feel that Luca could have gone through another thorough edit since there were many grammatical and spelling mistakes.  I'm not giving up on Gina's books.  I still want to read more of Abel and Gia's story whenever that may come.

BLURRED LINES (Out of Line, #5) by Jen McLaughlin Blog Tour - Giveaway + Reni's Review!

Once burned...

Finding my fiancée naked on my couch might’ve been a good thing, if her ex-boyfriend hadn’t been with her. For the past eight years I’ve been a witness to the power of true love, but after getting burned I’d decided there wasn’t any hope for me finding it for myself. Until I met Noelle Brandt in a hotel bar. Maybe it wasn’t the most romantic meeting, but the moment I met her I knew I had to have her. The more I learn about her, the more I know I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her.

Twice shy...

I’d already found the love of my life, but I’d lost that love forever. And I’d been lost ever since. But one night a wounded man makes all of that go away. He makes me laugh, live, and feel alive. When he tells me he has no intention of letting me go, I finally begin to believe in the power of true love again.  That is, until I find out who he really is…and by then, it’s far too late to correct the mistakes we’ve already made. By the time we both know the truth, the lines have already been blurred beyond recognition.

If you’ve read the first four books in the Out of Line series, you’re very well acquainted with Carrie and Finn. Well, this story isn’t about either of them. Remember Riley? He turned out to be a pretty fabulous friend (even if he did think he was in love with Carrie for a while…). It’s time that the man got his own story!

Riley was too much. He was fabulous and wonderful and romantic. This was crazy. He was crazy. And I was crazy about him.

If it was wrong to fall so hard and so fast, then I didn’t want to be right. It might be cliché to think that, but it was true. I didn’t.

I’m going to be brutally honest with you; Riley’s story is everything I usually hate. Boy meets girl and instantly falls head-over-heels in love. At best, love at first sight is nothing more than lust. Just my humble opinion. Boy is privileged; girl is from a questionable family. Bad communication…yada, yada. You get where I’m going with this. I was a little disappointed. I had expected Riley’s story to be something ah-mazing, kinda like Carrie and Finn’s. I loved those two. *sigh*

It wasn’t all bad. Not at all. Noelle (the heroine in this tale) has been through a lot in her short life. A LOT. As she struggled with letting go of her past and grabbing onto a new happily ever after, I struggled alongside her. It was tough. And when she met Riley’s mother… Gah. Nope. Stopping right there. Let’s just say it was a heart wrenching experience.

Overall, Blurred Lines was a quick, easily, likable read. It didn’t blow me away. I didn’t hate it. It just sort of was… If you’ve been reading this series, I think you’ll enjoy this installment; it just wasn’t for me.

FOR NOW (Rules of Love, #2) by Chelsea M. Cameron Tour, Review, + Giveaway!

Two people. A one-night stand. What could go wrong?

Javier Cruz definitely isn’t relationship material, but that suits Hazel Gellar just fine. She’s not a relationship girl and doesn’t plan on ever being one.

But after a mind-blowing, panty-ripping, bed-breaking night, she knows once isn’t going to be enough. Fortunately, Javi feels the same way. Soon, what started as just one night turns into a lot of nights, and Hazel doesn’t know what to do.

Will she and Javi make the choice to be together for longer than just right NOW?

Okay.  Stop everything. Well, not everything. Continue reading…

Javier...

I kinda had this vision of Javier from reading For Real (Rules of Love, #1).  I saw him as this big, beefy, cocky asshole. He was more concerned about getting his jollies off than who was helping achieve said jollying. He was the quintessential bad boy… Until For Now. In For Now, Javier has grown a much larger heart and conscience. When did this happen? I guess it started to expand at the end of For Real… I just didn’t think it had grown that much.

Javier has a thing for Hazel, and Hazel has a firm distaste for relationships. She doesn’t do them. Then again, neither did Javier…until he made like the Grinch and his heart quadrupled in size. Most of the story involves Javier chasing Hazel around. Well, maybe there wasn’t so much chasing… It was more like apartments/bed crashing (both literally and figuratively.) It was sweet and made Javier exponentially more likable.

“You like to make yourself at home, don’t you?” I say, dumping the dustpan in the trash and then putting the broom away.
“Your place is nicer than mine. And my place doesn’t have you in it. So.”

As you have probably already guess, Javier and Hazel start getting hot and heavy. This scares Hazel to some extent, because, as I stated earlier, she doesn’t do relationship. Ever. That brings about a little tension between the two.  But, for the most part, this book is pretty light on the angst.

My main complaint has to do with the editing, in relation to dialog. I found it hard to follow at times. By the time you read this novel, it may have all been resolved. I just had a little trouble following along because of it.

Javier has a few secrets we’re made privy to that explain a great deal about his demeanor. It’s a lot for Hazel to swallow. It would be a lot for ANYONE to swallow.

Overall, For Now was a sweet, quick read. It didn’t knock my socks off, but I also didn’t come away feeling like I wasted my time by reading it.  It’s cute. Plain and simple. I wouldn’t recommend reading this one without first reading For Real. It gives a little more back story into Javier and Hazel which can be beneficial to the reader.

Blog Tour Review of AGAIN by Lisa Burstein

How far would you go for a second chance?

Eleven years after flunking out of college, Kate has finally hit rock-bottom. Losing her job and boyfriend in one drunken night, she’s determined to fix her life by going back to the moment when she let partying and sex take over and do things right. At twenty-nine, she heads back to freshman year of college, with a catch.

Pretending she's nineteen with a new roommate and full class schedule is easy. When she meets her shy, sexy and seven-years-younger RA Carter, following her self-imposed sobriety and celibacy rules is proving to be anything but.

A senior enduring years of regret, Carter is more than ready to graduate. He’s anxious to move on from the party his freshman year where he witnessed his frat brothers about to commit a sexual assault. Instead of doing the right thing and stepping in, he looked the other way and left. His guilt has made for a lonely four years.

When he meets the new freshman on his floor, spunky and confident Kate, he wonders if his time as an outcast has finally come to an end.

Kate and Carter’s growing friendship and undeniable attraction make it harder to hide the demons from their respective pasts. But when their secrets are finally revealed, will their chance at starting over together still be there?

After reading the blurb for Again, I knew I had to read it. How could you pass up the chance to read about a 29 year old posing as a 19 year old college student? How could this possibly go well?

Yeah, it can't…

Kate has royally f-ed up her life. We’re talking go-big-or-go-home style. She recently got fired from her assistant job at a NYC law firm. Not so bad, right? Just wait… Her former, very married boss, was also her lover. Not good.  She also has a MASSIVE drinking problem. After making a fool of herself at the company Christmas party, finding herself jobless, and losing the current lust of her life, Kate decides that the only logical move is to doctor her transcripts, pretend to be 19, and go back to college.
When has lying ever gotten anyone anywhere?! I guess it gets you somewhere… but serving time for fraud isn’t exactly where one would hope to find themselves… The more lies you tell the further down the rabbit hole you go until you finally hit rock bottom.

This book has all that, and more…

Soon it would be at my lips and kissing hers would be the only way I could breathe. The only way I could save us, the only thing that might ever save me.

It even has Carter - or should I say Chazz? - (HORRIBLE nickname; even Carter knows it’s atrocious. He puts up with it as punishment for choices made years ago.) Kate’s RA. Too bad Kate is determined to stay away from men. Plus, he’s 7 years younger than she is. Cougar alert! Needless to say, the two have trouble staying away from one another. And they’re both lying… It’s a mess. Eventually the truth comes out and the two are forced to face the music. There’s also a Goth roommate, two very slutty drunk floor mates, and gay best friend thrown in the mix.

I wasn’t supposed to be with Carter. If I was smart I would have stayed the hell away, but I couldn’t picture my life without him. Even with all our lies between us, his kiss, his touch, were the truest thing I’d ever known.

Again was my first taste of Lisa Burstein. While I wasn’t blown away, it was an entertaining read that moved along fairly quickly and held just the right amount of drama. I think Lisa could have done a little more with the storyline and there were occasional moments where I wished I was able to physically slap Kate… but overall, Again was a sweet HEA read. I look forward to reading more of Lisa’s work in the near future.
